Agricultural Wire Mesh, Built for the Outdoors
Galvanized welded mesh, hardware cloth, and woven wire — cut to size for gopher baskets, tree guards, seed-cleaning screens, and animal enclosures. Family-owned in Hayward, CA since 1938.
From gopher baskets buried in heavy clay to seed screens running on a cleaning line, wire mesh takes a beating in ag and landscaping — UV, irrigation, fertilizer salts, hungry rodents, and constant handling. Howard Wire Cloth Co. has fabricated galvanized welded mesh, hardware cloth, and woven wire for growers, nurseries, and landscapers since 1938. We cut USA-made mesh to your dimensions and back every job with free samples, so the barrier you install matches the spec you actually need.
Where Agriculture & Landscaping Relies On Wire Mesh
Gopher & Vole Baskets
Line planting holes and raised beds with galvanized welded baskets or 1/4" hardware cloth to keep gophers, voles, and moles off roots and bulbs.
Tree Guards & Trunk Wraps
Wrap trunks in hardware cloth or welded mesh to stop rabbit, deer, and rodent gnawing while letting bark breathe and stay dry.
Trellises & Plant Supports
Rigid welded mesh panels train vines, cane fruit, and climbing vegetables and hold up to wind and repeated seasons far better than plastic netting.
Seed & Grain Cleaning Screens
Precision woven wire openings grade, size, and clean seed and grain on shakers, gravity tables, and cleaning boxes.
Animal & Aviary Enclosures
Half-inch galvanized welded mesh and hardware cloth build predator-resistant coops, runs, aviaries, and hutches that keep raccoons and snakes out.
Erosion, Drainage & Greenhouse
Mesh reinforces gabions and erosion control, screens culverts and drains against debris, and frames benching and shade structures in greenhouses.
Why Wire Mesh For Agriculture & Landscaping
Survives the elements
Hot-dip galvanized and stainless finishes resist rain, irrigation, fertilizer salts, and soil moisture for years of outdoor service without breaking down like plastic.
Exclusion that actually lasts
Welded mesh and hardware cloth form a rigid barrier rodents and predators can't chew or push through — the failure point of nets and plastic fencing.
Airflow, light, and drainage
Open mesh lets water, air, and sunlight reach roots and plants while still blocking pests, which matters for tree guards, greenhouse work, and enclosures.
Cut to your dimensions
We fabricate rolls, sheets, and pre-cut blanks to size, so you skip on-site cutting waste and get consistent baskets, guards, and screens every time.

Common Questions
What mesh size stops gophers and voles?
Use 3/4" galvanized welded mesh or 1/2" hardware cloth for gophers; drop to 1/4" hardware cloth to also exclude voles and mice. We cut both to basket or roll sizes.
Galvanized-before-weld or galvanized-after-weld for buried baskets?
Galvanized-after-weld (GAW) coats the weld joints that galvanized-before-weld leaves bare, so it resists rust far longer underground — worth it for baskets meant to last multiple seasons.
Do you make custom seed and grain cleaning screens?
Yes. We stock woven wire in a wide range of openings and cut screens to your frame or screen-box dimensions for grading, sizing, and cleaning seed and grain.
What holds up in coastal or high-salt environments?
304 or 316 stainless woven or welded mesh outlasts galvanized where salt air, washdown, or fertilizer runoff attack zinc coatings.
Can I get samples before I commit to an order?
Yes — we quote by the job and send free samples so you can confirm the mesh opening, wire gauge, and finish before committing to a cut-to-size run.
