How to Keep Gophers Out of Your Garden (Without Poison)
If you garden anywhere in California, you know the experience: a tomato plant that looked fine yesterday is wilted this morning, and when you tug it, the whole thing lifts out of the ground with no roots attached. How to Tell You Have Gophers
Before you buy anything, make sure you are dealing with pocket gophers and not moles or voles.
- Crescent or fan-shaped dirt mounds with a plugged hole off to one side. Gophers push soil out sideways, then seal the entrance behind them. Moles leave round volcano-shaped mounds.
- Plants that disappear or tip over. Gophers eat roots from below and will pull smaller plants straight down into the tunnel. A plant that comes out of the ground rootless is the classic sign.
- Chewed drip lines. Gophers gnaw on plastic, and mystery leaks in a drip system often trace back to them.
- Fresh mounds every few days. A single gopher can throw up several mounds a week while extending its tunnels.
If you see surface runways in the grass rather than mounds, you may have voles instead. The barriers below help with voles too, but it is worth knowing which animal you are up against.
Why Exclusion Beats Poison and Traps in a Garden
Poison baits and traps have a place in large-scale field management, but for a home vegetable garden they have real drawbacks. Poison in a food garden is an obvious problem: you are growing things you plan to eat, and baits can also harm owls, hawks, dogs, and cats that catch a poisoned gopher. Traps work, but they only remove the gopher you have now. Gopher territory does not stay empty; when one animal is removed, a neighbor moves into the vacant tunnels, often within weeks, and you are back where you started.
A wire barrier flips the problem around. Instead of fighting an endless series of gophers, you make the roots unreachable and let them dig wherever they like on the other side of the mesh. Install it once at planting time and it protects that plant for years with zero maintenance. How Gopher Baskets Work
A gopher basket is a cage of galvanized wire mesh that you plant directly into the ground, with your plant inside it. The concept is simple:
- Gophers cannot chew through galvanized steel wire. Their teeth make quick work of plastic mesh and drip line, but steel stops them cold.
- Roots grow right through the openings. The mesh openings are large enough that feeder roots pass through freely and the plant establishes normally. The basket protects the root ball and crown, which is the part a gopher can actually kill.
- The wire outlasts the vulnerable years. Galvanized mesh typically holds up underground for several years, which is long enough for trees and shrubs to develop root systems big enough to shrug off some nibbling at the edges.

Planting with a Gopher Basket, Step by Step
- Match the basket to the root ball. A 1 gallon basket suits vegetables, perennials, and 1 gallon nursery stock; use a 5 gallon for shrubs and small trees. When in doubt, go one size up.
- Dig the hole slightly wider and deeper than the basket, so it sits fully below grade except for the top inch or two.
- Set the basket in the hole and backfill around the outside so soil holds it snugly.
- Plant inside the basket exactly as you normally would.
- Leave the rim proud of the soil surface. Keeping the top edge an inch or two above grade stops gophers from climbing over at night and digging down inside the basket.
- Mulch up to the rim, not over it, so nothing bridges over the top.
That is the whole job. There is nothing to check, refill, or reset afterward.
Gopher-Proofing a Raised Bed with Hardware Cloth
For raised beds, the standard approach is to line the bottom of the bed with hardware cloth, which is a galvanized welded wire mesh with small square openings. Do this before the bed is filled with soil, because retrofitting a full bed means shoveling it out.
- Cut the mesh to the inside dimensions of the bed plus a few extra inches per side. We cut hardware cloth to size, so if your beds are 4 by 8 feet you can order pieces that drop straight in.
- Lay it flat across the bottom and turn the extra material up the inside walls.
- Staple or screw the turned-up edges to the wood every few inches, closing the corner gap where a gopher would squeeze between mesh and wall.
- Overlap seams generously. If one piece will not cover the bed, overlap pieces by a few inches and wire the seam shut. A gopher only needs a small gap.
- Fill the bed and plant normally. Roots grow through the mesh into the native soil below, so deep-rooted crops do fine.

What Opening Size Keeps Gophers Out?
For pocket gophers, the openings most commonly recommended are 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch. Both are small enough that a gopher cannot pass through, while still letting roots grow freely. Some gardeners prefer 1/2 inch because it also excludes smaller diggers like voles; 3/4 inch uses a bit less wire and lets roots through even more freely. Wildlife pressure varies by region, so it is worth checking your local cooperative extension guidance for what works in your area. Whichever you choose, the wire itself matters as much as the opening: stick with galvanized steel in a sturdy gauge, not plastic mesh or window screen.
