What Size Hardware Cloth Do You Need? 1/8", 1/4", 1/2" Compared
Walk up to our counter in Hayward and ask for hardware cloth, and the first question you'll get back is simple: what are you trying to keep out? That one answer settles most of the decision. Hardware cloth comes in a handful of standard opening sizes, and the opening size, more than anything else, determines what the mesh will do for you. The three sizes we cut the most of are 1/8 inch, 1/4 inch, and 1/2 inch. Here's how to choose, plus what to know about wire gauge and galvanizing before you order.
The Basic Rule: The Opening Size Is What It Excludes
Hardware cloth is named by its opening. A 1/2" mesh has square openings roughly half an inch across, a 1/4" mesh has quarter-inch openings, and so on. Anything smaller than the opening can pass through, and animals are better at squeezing than most people expect. The practical rule is to size the mesh to the smallest animal you need to stop, not the average one, and to leave yourself some margin.
For pest exclusion, the sizes commonly recommended break down like this: 1/4" and smaller for mice and voles, 1/2" for rats, squirrels, and gophers, and larger openings such as 1" for rabbits and bigger animals. 1/8" Hardware Cloth: The Fine Screen
1/8" mesh is the finest of the three, usually made from light wire around 27 gauge. The openings are small enough to stop wasps, bees, and other large insects, which makes it a common choice for soffit vents, gable vents, and weep hole covers where you want airflow but no nesting. It's also the go-to for sifting: soil screens, compost sifters, and seed cleaning trays are mostly built from 1/8" cloth.
Two things to know before you pick it. First, 1/8" will not stop mosquitoes, gnats, or other small insects. If bugs that small are the problem, you want actual insect screen, which has much finer openings. Second, fine mesh trades away airflow. The smaller the opening and the more wire in the way, the less open area you have, and fine mesh clogs faster with paint, dust, and debris. Use 1/8" where you need it and step up to a larger opening where you don't.
1/4" Hardware Cloth: The Rodent Standard
1/4" mesh, typically in 23 gauge wire, is the size most commonly recommended for keeping out mice and voles. Adult mice can flatten themselves through surprisingly small gaps, so 1/2" openings generally won't stop them; 1/4" is the usual answer when mice are the target.
Typical jobs for 1/4" cloth: sealing gaps under siding and around pipe penetrations, covering foundation and crawl space vents, lining the bottoms of raised beds where voles are the problem, screening chick brooders where day-old chicks are small enough to slip through larger mesh, and general-purpose sifting where 1/8" is finer than you need. It strikes a good balance between exclusion and airflow, which is why it's the default for vent work.
1/2" Hardware Cloth: The Workhorse
1/2" mesh is our most popular size, and there's a reason. It's commonly recommended for excluding rats, squirrels, and gophers, and it's typically made from 19 gauge wire, which is noticeably heavier and stiffer than what you get in the finer sizes. That extra wire matters when an animal is actively working against the mesh: gnawing, digging, or pulling.
You'll see 1/2" cloth on chicken coops and runs, chimney and attic vent covers, tree trunk guards, and under raised beds in gopher country. It holds its shape over a span better than lighter mesh, so it's also the practical choice when the panel has to be somewhat self-supporting. If you need to stop rats and mice with one material, use 1/4"; if squirrels and larger animals are the concern and you want the stronger wire, 1/2" is usually the pick. For rabbits and larger animals, 1" openings in a heavy gauge are commonly used, and at that point you're often shopping general welded wire mesh rather than hardware cloth proper.

Wire Gauge: Thickness Matters as Much as Opening
Gauge numbers run backwards: the smaller the number, the thicker the wire. A 19 gauge wire is more than twice the diameter of a 27 gauge wire, and the difference in stiffness is bigger than the numbers suggest. Heavier wire buys you three things: resistance to chewing and clawing, resistance to being pushed or pried out of shape, and the ability to span a frame opening without sagging. Lighter wire buys you easier cutting and bending, lower weight, and lower cost. For a vent cover screwed to a wall, light wire is fine because the structure is doing the work. For a coop wall a raccoon can reach, or a buried basket a gopher can gnaw on, the heavier gauge earns its keep. One more subtlety: in a given mesh, thicker wire means slightly smaller openings. It rarely changes what the mesh excludes, but it does cut airflow a little.
Galvanized Before Weld vs. Galvanized After Weld
Most hardware cloth is welded galvanized steel, and how it got galvanized matters for lifespan. Galvanized before weld (GBW) means the wire was zinc-coated first, then welded into mesh. The welding burns the zinc off at each joint, so every weld is a small spot of bare steel. That's acceptable for dry, indoor, or short-term work, and GBW costs less.
Galvanized after weld (GAW) means the finished mesh was dipped in molten zinc after welding, so the coating seals the welds and the wire in one continuous layer. For anything outdoors, in contact with soil, or anywhere damp, GAW is the better buy; the welds are usually where GBW mesh rusts first. Matching the Size to the Project
- Chicken coops and runs: 1/2" GAW is the common choice for walls and runs, with 1/4" for brooders and anywhere snakes or mice are a concern. Lightweight hexagonal chicken netting keeps chickens in but is generally not counted on to keep predators out.
- Vents and soffits: 1/8" or 1/4" depending on whether insects or mice are the bigger worry, in a light gauge since the framing carries the load.
