You call and ask for 1/4″ hardware cloth. The quote comes back reading 4 Mesh – 23 Gauge Wire – Galvanized Hardware Cloth. Nobody made a mistake, and it is not a different product. It is the same roll described in a different language — and if you have ever wondered whether you got what you ordered, this is usually why.

There is also a second, quieter thing going on: the opening you actually receive is smaller than the number you asked for. That part matters more than the naming, and almost nobody explains it.

The Rule: Mesh Count Is Openings Per Inch

Mesh count is simply how many openings fall in one linear inch, measured from the centre of one wire to the centre of the wire two over.

So mesh count is the reciprocal of the nominal opening:

  • 1/2″ nominal → 2 mesh (two openings per inch)
  • 1/4″ nominal → 4 mesh
  • 1/8″ nominal → 8 mesh

That is the whole trick. Flip the fraction and you have the mesh count. The hardware store sells you the fraction; the mill that wove it counts the openings.

The Catch: Nominal Is Not What You Get

Here is where the two systems stop lining up cleanly. Mesh count measures centre to centre — it includes the wire. The hole you can actually push something through is that spacing minus the wire diameter.

Which means a heavier wire in the same mesh count gives you a smaller hole. Same "4 mesh" label, different actual opening.

These are real numbers from our own stock, not textbook figures:

Read the last two rows again. Both get sold as 1/8″ hardware cloth, and they are not the same screen. The 7 mesh gives you a true 0.125″ hole. The 8 mesh gives you 0.108″ — about 14% tighter.

Neither is wrong. But if a spec says "openings shall not exceed 1/8 inch," the 8 mesh clears it comfortably and the 7 mesh lands exactly on the line. And if you need airflow or throughput, the 7 mesh is the one that gives it to you.

When The Difference Actually Bites

Pest exclusion. The margin between 0.25″ and 0.224″ is the kind of gap that decides whether a young mouse gets through. Sizing off the nominal number rather than the clear opening is how people end up re-doing a job. Our guide on what size hardware cloth to use works through the common cases.

Code-driven work. Where a maximum opening is written into a requirement — as with ember-resistant vent screening in California — the inspector is interested in the clear opening, not the label on the roll.

Sieving and separation. Once you are sorting by particle size, nominal is meaningless and you should be working in clear opening or microns. That is the subject of mesh count, opening size, and microns explained.

Which System Will You Run Into?

Broadly: fractional inches are how hardware cloth is sold to the public, and mesh count is how the wire cloth trade, mills, and spec sheets talk. Coarse material tends to get named in inches; fine material is almost always mesh count, because "0.0079 inch" is a worse thing to say than "80 mesh."

Two more things worth knowing when you compare quotes:

  • Gauge is its own system again. 19, 21, 23, and 27 gauge above are Steel Wire Gauge, and the numbers run backwards — higher gauge means thinner wire. We keep a wire gauge chart for exactly this.
  • Galvanized before or after weaving is not a detail. It decides whether the cut ends are protected. We cover it in galvanized before vs. after weld.

Do The Math Yourself

For any woven mesh:

Clear opening = (1 ÷ mesh count) − wire diameter

So 4 mesh in 0.026″ wire is (1 ÷ 4) − 0.026 = 0.224″. Our opening and open-area calculator will also do it, along with the percentage of the screen that is actually hole.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 4 mesh the same as 1/4″ hardware cloth?
In practice yes — that is the same product under two naming systems. Just note the clear opening is about 0.224″, not a full 0.250″.

Why does my quote list a mesh count when I asked for inches?
Because that is how the material is specified upstream. Nothing has been substituted. If you want the clear opening confirmed in writing before you commit, ask — we would rather answer it first.

Does a higher mesh count mean a bigger or smaller hole?
Smaller. More openings per inch means each one is finer. 8 mesh is finer than 4 mesh.

How do I convert mesh count to microns?
Work out the clear opening in inches, then multiply by 25,400. A 0.224″ opening is roughly 5,690 microns.
