Gopher Baskets
A gopher basket is a cage of galvanized wire you plant with the plant. Roots grow out through the openings; gophers can't chew in. One install protects the plant for years, with no bait, no traps and no maintenance.
Ready-made baskets come in 1, 5 and 15 gallon to match nursery pot sizes — pick a basket one size up from the root ball. Need something else? We build custom baskets to any dimension in our Hayward shop.
Building your own? Use galvanized hardware cloth. 1/2" and 3/4" openings let feeder roots pass freely while stopping gophers; 1/4" also excludes voles, at the cost of a little root restriction. Heavier wire lasts longer underground — 19 to 21 gauge is the practical range for buried baskets.
